Blackcurrant is a flavor of mine that is, and has been, a favorite for many years now. It’s one you see pop up here and there in nicotine pouches, but it’s a very rare one in the world of snus. Which is surprising, because it’s actually a very, very good flavor.
Let’s flash back for a moment. The year is 2012. Swedish Match has released a new snus, Catch Blackcurrant Slim White Portion. Or, maybe it was “long portion”, as they were calling them back then. After trying it, I fell in love with it. But, as always happens, it was discontinued.
Okay, flash forward to 2020, and Skruf releases Skruf Solbær (Solbär). It has a black currant taste, but has some mint mixed in to it. It’s fine, I can work with it. But, it’s discontinued as well. Now, in 2023, Swedish Match has given us G.3 Rize. Does it fill the black currant shaped hole in my heart? Well, let’s find out more!

When Swedish Match announced it, this is how they described it: “Light tobacco character with clear hints of fruit and berries as well as clear hints of black currants”. Opening up the can I count 24 portions. The can weighs 16.6 grams, so that means each portion is a little light at 0.69 grams each. The nicotine content is 12mg/g, but due to that lighter pouch weight it actually breaks down to just 8.28mg/portion.
So, how good is this stuff? Let me tell you more.
Well, the aroma is really nice. It has a present blackcurrant aroma to it. And, it’s not super sweet nor is it minty. Those are the two things I was the most worried about. But, I was pleasantly surprised to see it had neither of those things going on. Just a nice, beautiful aroma of black currant. The portions are slim, and though they’re called “white”, to me they’re almost like white dry portions. That’s no biggie to me, just something I noticed. They have a nice fit under the lip, and a pretty soft mouthfeel. The flavor is where this one really shines. It has an amazing black currant taste. It reminds me of what the 2012 Catch tasted like, or at least what my memory tells me. It has a little tobacco base to it, but it doesn’t overpower the black currant. And, it’s not overly sweet, and it’s not overly minty. That’s a win in my book. In the nicotine department, it hits right at the regular strength level, and that is pretty satisfactory to me. The flavor lasts a solid hour, sometimes more.
Snubie’s Final Thoughts
This one became a regular snus for me from the first can I opened last month. Now, it’s one I have with me every day. It’s rare to add snus products to my personal rotation. I can’t remember the last time I did. But this is the first one in ages that was so, so good, that I couldn’t resist. If you haven’t had it, go get it. I can assure you that probably a good chunk of the snus community will love this one. It’s that good.
